Children's Hospital is part of the UPMC family.
The goal of the training program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at UPMC is to provide fellows with the fundamentals of clinical diagnosis and management of problems related to the health and well-being of the fetus and neonate. Fellows develop a special competence in the management of critically ill neonates, which includes techniques of neonatal resuscitation, venous and arterial access, endotracheal intubation, preparation for and active transport of critically ill infants, ventilator support, continuous monitoring, temperature control, nutritional support, and general principles of critical care medicine. The curriculum for fellows in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at our institution reflects our commitment to provide the community of pediatrics with neonatologists who can render high-quality clinical care, perform meaningful laboratory and/or clinical research, and teach effectively.
Our primary focus in the fellowship program is to train academic neonatologists. This is achieved by combining rigorous clinical training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine with a mentored research experience. Fellows are guided by division faculty in both of these endeavors and are encouraged to take advantage of the breadth and depth of research opportunities in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area to obtain state-of-the-art training in basic, translational, bioinformatic, clinical, epidemiological, or health-services research. The fellowship is a three-year program (one year clinical, two years research); many of our fellows are encouraged to continue their research endeavors upon completion of training by staying in the program as junior faculty for an additional two or three years in order to further develop their supervisory skills as an attending neonatologist and complete their transition to an independent faculty member.
