Children's Hospital is part of the UPMC family.
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC offers a three-year ACGME-accredited fellowship program.
The program provides outstanding clinical training. Currently there are 8 attending physicians, with diverse backgrounds in areas of renal physiology and immunology, making it one of the largest programs in the country. The Pediatric Renal Transplant service is one of the largest in the country, providing innovative, state-of-the-art care. The robust inpatient, consult, and outpatient service will allow the fellow to care for a broad spectrum of patients with kidney disorders. Supplementing learning from direct patient contact, the fellows will participate in didactic lectures and journal clubs, and will develop a Quality Improvement project.
The fellowship program also offers outstanding and diverse opportunities for clinical, translational, and basic research. The program successfully competed for an NIH T32 fellowship training grant (one of only a handful in the country). There are also currently 5 NIH funded investigators within the division working on a variety of areas. Specific research interests within the division (and other divisions in the department) include fluid management, renal development (genetic and epigenetic), vesicoureteral reflux, obstructive nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease, tubular toxicity of albuminuria, transplant immunology/infection, podocyte biology, epithelial cell polarization, protein trafficking in epithelial cells, pyelonephritis, and neonatal hydronephrosis. Fellows will also have the opportunity to work with faculty in the adult nephrology program, which has a strong NIH funded research program, including a very prestigious O’Brien Center award, dedicated to foster collaborations in renal research. Fellows will be assigned a research mentor and an oversight committee, and will undergo didactic courses to ensure progress in completing a specific research project, writing manuscripts, and learning how to write grant applications.
In summary, fellows that complete the program will be well-trained to perform clinical and/or research in Pediatric Nephrology.
