Children's Hospital is part of the UPMC family.
For more than three decades, endocrinologists at Children’s Hospital have played a major role in the care of children with diabetes and all types of hormone-related disorders. Children's has one of the largest pediatric diabetes programs in the world, with approximately 2,700 patients each year.
Children's endocrinologists provide consultative and long-term management of diabetes and work together with diabetes nurse educators, dieticians, social workers and other team members to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient.
Children's physicians are continually conducting research to understand better the causes of childhood diabetes in the hope of preventing the disorder and its complications and, ultimately, finding a cure. As a result, Children's often is one of the first institutions to implement new treatments and incorporate new research developments into its clinical practice. In addition, Children's patients benefit from physicians’ collaboration with colleagues in pediatric immunogenetics and the new University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute, (jointly sponsored by Children's Hospital and the UPMC Health System) and the JDRF Center for Gene Therapy Approaches to Type 1 Diabetes.
