Biography

Research Interests

Dr. Chu has been actively involved in ongoing efforts to better understand alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency-associated liver disease. His laboratory research has focused on the interaction between the insulin signaling pathway with the degradation of accumulated mutant alpha-1-antitrypsin within the liver. He has conducted a large database study of patients with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency who underwent liver transplantation at UPMC over more than 20 years. In addition, he has also been involved with other clinical research efforts within the division, including a trial of carbamazepine for patients with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, as well as studies in inflammatory bowel disease and constipation.
