Burhanuddin Mahmood, MD, is a member of the UPMC Newborn Medicine Program of the Division of Neonatology and Developmental Biology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine.
A native of Pakistan, Dr. Mahmood received his medical degree from the Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi. He underwent internship training at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Pediatrics and Surgery. He completed his pediatric residency at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Penn State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He completed his fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Magee Womens and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Mahmood serves as Director and Coordinator of the Neonatal ECMO Program for the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC at University of Pittsburgh. He coordinates the divisions ECMO related educational endeavors and developed latest clinical management guidelines for non-cardiac neonatal ECMO patients.
He is actively involved with the Reproductive and Developmental Biology Course offered at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine as well as division's educational efforts with the pediatric residents and neonatal-perinatal fellows. He serves as coordinator of the neonatal component of pediatric clinical course for the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. He also contributes to the teaching curriculum of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Masters Program at University of Pittsburgh.
In addition to his clinical and educational responsibilities, Dr. Mahmood serves on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee of Magee Womens Hospital of Pittsburgh and supervises the Newborn Division’s nutrition and medication services. He is also an active member of the division’s clinical consensus committee that regularly reviews patient care guidelines.
Dr. Mahmood’s clinical interests include defining management strategies and outcomes for neonates with severe respiratory failure including those who need ECMO support.
