Dr. Abdel-Hamid is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed her Pediatric residency at Hurley Medical Center/Michigan State University and then did a Child Neurology residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC (CHP) followed by a Neuromuscular/Neurophysiology fellowship at UPMC. She then joined the Child Neurology faculty and the department of Pediatrics at CHP.
Dr. Abdel-Hamid is the director of the pediatric neuromuscular program and the pediatric EMG laboratory as well as the pediatric MDA clinic at CHP. She received the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Clerkship Preceptor of the year award in 2007 and the Hurley Children’s Hospital distinguished alumni award in 2015.
Dr. Abdel-Hamid evaluates patients with neuromuscular symptoms, performs neurophysiologic studies and Botox injections, orders genetic testing and prescribes various medical and physical treatments. She follows all patients with pediatric neuromuscular disease in a multi-disciplinary setting through the MDA clinic that is located at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Abdel-Hamid is involved in many therapeutic biomedical trials for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and collaborates with other centers and entities for the care of patients with pediatric neuromuscular disease. She is also serves on the executive committee of NeuroNext which organizes collaborative studies to test new therapies for various neurologic diseases.
