Joseph E. Losee, MD, FAAP, FACS, is chief of the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and director of the Pittsburgh Cleft-Craniofacial Center. Since joining Children's in 2003, he has overseen the transition of the cleft-craniofacial center to the Division of Plastic Surgery, combining the resources of one of the nation's leading pediatric hospitals with one of the oldest and busiest interdisciplinary centers for treating cleft and craniofacial anomalies in children.
The Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery has grown significantly under Dr. Losee's stewardship. By 2005, it offered eight clinical practitioners with expertise in a range of specialties, including a full-time orthodontist, a speech pathologist, hand surgeons and cleft-craniofacial surgeons. New initiatives were also developed to further expand the division, including the addition of a basic science laboratory, Vascular Anomalies Center, Pediatric Hand Center and a Giant Nevi Center.
In addition to his hospital duties, Dr. Losee is an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency and the craniofacial fellowship programs.
Prior to joining Children's, Dr. Losee was an attending surgeon and director of the Strong Center for Craniofacial Anomalies at the University of Rochester and Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. He received his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he also completed a combined residency in general surgery and plastic surgery. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Losee's clinical interests focus on children born with congenital deformities, including clefting and craniofacial anomalies. His research interests include several areas related to cleft and craniofacial surgery. As an author, his articles have been published in the leading journals in the field, including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery.
Dr. Losee is a member of several professional and scientific societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Craniofacial Surgeons and the American Association of Pediatric Plastic Surgeons. In 2003, the Joseph E. Losee, MD, Teaching Award was established at the University of Rochester in recognition of his commitment to the education of medical students and residents.
