Dr. Robert Safier joined the University of Pittsburgh in September 2005 to serve as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology in the Division of Child Neurology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Penn State University in 1991. He received his M.D. degree from Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1999. This opportunity to learn medicine in a non-US setting served to strengthen his interest in diverse patient populations and cultures and to help him appreciate varying medical care delivery systems. He completed his training in Pediatrics at MetroHealth Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, OH in 2002. At the completion of his Pediatric Residency, he was awarded the resident Good Fellow Award, which is selected by junior residents for being an outstanding senior resident for dedication and service towards his colleagues. He completed his training in Child Neurology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in 2005. During his final year, he was awarded the Child Neurology Society Outstanding Junior Member Award, which is chosen by the Scientific Selection Committee as an outstanding junior member presenting an abstract. Dr. Safier had two abstracts presented during that annual meeting in Los Angeles, CA in 2005.
Dr. Safier is highly skilled as an educator and is the Director of Medical Student Education for the Division of Child Neurology. As both Clinical Neurosciences Child Neurology Clerkship Director and as Child Neurology elective Course Director he is committed to teaching and mentoring medical students. On the graduate medical education level, Dr. Safier is involved in the clinical education of child neurology residents. As an active member on the Child Neurology Education Committee, he developed new Clinical Neurosciences Clerkship structures within the Division of Child Neurology. His mentorship directly influenced medical students to choose the field of child neurology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and nationally.
Dr. Safier is recognized as an excellent general clinical child neurologist and regularly receives high praises from his patients and their families. His main research interest is studying the clinical and radiological presentation of hemiplegic migraine of childhood to better understand the pathophysiology. Since July 2005, Dr. Safier serves one day a week as the staff neurologist at Polk State Home, a campus for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Dr. Safier has been a leader in various clinical quality improvement projects within the Division of Child Neurology and at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

this was our first visit with Dr. Safier. Wish we would've found him years ago! what an amazing and remarkable doctor! Very patient and caring and full of smiles and personality!
excellent physician that we have been with for 9 years
Dr. Safier always makes us feel comfortable and explains all of our options in great detail. It's a great feeling to have someone like him on your team!
The nurse practitioner was excellent. We were changing physician because of a prior poor experience. The nurse practitioner had reviewed all the records and was familiar with my son's history and diagnosis. She was very knowledgable and respectful. She asked questions to clarify issues and answered all questions. We spent the majority of the visit time with the nurse practitioner. The physician was only in the room for a short period, but the nurse practitioner had reviewed Ethan's information with him prior to his coming into the exam room so he was up to date on what was going on. Overall we were much happier and satisfied with our visit to the neurology department this time than previously.
The doctor was fantastic-very engaged with my child and attentive to me.
Dr Safier is one of the best doctors we have had! He is sincere, professional and truly listens to your concerns or progress. We love him!!
I have been so impressed with Dr. Safier. He is very throurough and has absolute respect for what we have to say and our concerns. He listens to us, validates us, and provides explanations using parent friendly terminology. He also limits his side conversations with his PA, which is appreciated as well.
Always a pleasant appointment when visiting Dr. Safier's office in Wexford. Also we met Dr. Safier's PA for the first time and she was excellent. Look forward to seeing her again.
I feel that Dr. Safier is a fantastic doctor. He listened to our concerns and even talked with our other children present at the appointment, not just our daughter. He is wonderful with the kids and puts things in a very easy to understand manner.

I thought that the provider did his job and ordered the right tests that he needed to have done for my son
Dr. Safier and his staff including other specialiest like genetics have gone above and beyond caring for our child. We couldn't be any happier with the care knowledge and the core values they show!

Dr. Safier is a pleasant, positive man who is easy to talk to and very respectful. We trust him to be our child's neurologist and respect him. He treated our son excellently with appropriate communication and feedback.
The doctor was awesome made our kid feel at ease, made him laugh and was a really great experience
great provider that really helped us understand what our concerns were and very good with our daughter
Very curdious Dr and staff
We enjoyed the visit everyone greeted us with a smile and so caring thanks
great provider, very helpful, very good with my son
I was happy about the thoroughness of the questions, especially initially from the resident, as he was able to spend time asking a lot of questions and was able to filter what was most important for what was going on with my daughter to relay to the provider for most efficient use of our time with him. I also found the provider very gracious in listening to my complaints about the difficult time we have had trying to address the problem with another field of medicine and whether he had other ideas.
Dr Safier almost seemed like he was trying to slow me down and to spend even more time with my son to make sure he had all the info he needed to see if there was anything else he could help with. He respected my son and his thoughts.
Our visit is always wonderful at this facility. From the registration to the physician.
