10/4/18 - Paul C. Gaffney, MD Memorial Lecture “Bone marrow failure syndrome: Clinical and Molecular Advances”

Akiko Shimamura, MD, PhD
Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School
Director, Bone Marrow Failure and MDS Program, Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center

Brief Summary of Lecture: Although clinical features provide important clues to that underlying diagnosis of a generic bone marrow failure syndrome, many patients have atypical or cyptic presentations. Patients often present with non-hematologic clinical findings. The diagnosis of a genetic bone marrow failure disorder informs medical management and treatment. Many genetic bone marrow failure disorders are associated with increased cancer risk. Dr. Shimamura will discuss challenges for diagnosis and clinical management. Molecular studies of bone marrow failure are advancing our understanding of hematopoiesis and clonal evolution, and revealing novel targets for rationally designed therapies.

Date & Time: Thursday, October 4, 8-9 a.m.
