Curriculum Overview: Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine Fellowship

Find out what to expect during the two-year Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine (PHM) Fellowship at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Year 1: PHM Fellowship

Core Clinical Rotations (20 weeks) Individual Curriculum (16 weeks)
  1. General Pediatric Inpatient Medicine: 12 weeks.
  2. PICU: 4 weeks.
  3. NICU: 4 weeks.
  1. Anesthesia/Sedation: 4 weeks.
  2. Child Advocacy Center: 4 weeks.
  3. Palliative Care and Pain Management: 4 weeks.
  4. Well Baby Nursery: 4 weeks.

Systems and Scholarship: 12 weeks. Education in research techniques and research time.

Vacation: 4 weeks.

Year 2: PHM Fellowship

Core Clinical Rotations (12 weeks) Individual Curriculum (16 weeks)
  1. General Pediatric Inpatient Medicine: 8 weeks.
    • Community Hospital Rotation: 4 weeks.
  2. Inpatient Hematology Service: 2 weeks.
  3. Inpatient Endocrinology Service: 2 weeks.
  1. Radiology: 2 weeks.
  2. The Children’s Home and Lemieux Family Center: 4 weeks.
  3. Observation Unit: 2 weeks.
  4. Infectious Disease Inpatient Consults: 2 weeks.
  5. Electives: 6 weeks.

Systems and Scholarship: 20 weeks. Create and implement a research project with either a poster presentation, oral presentation, or paper publication.

Vacation: 4 weeks.

Didactic Curriculum: Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine Fellowship

There are four main components of the PHM Fellowship didactic curriculum:

  1. Lecture series.
  2. Unified fellows course.
  3. Diagnostic Service journal club.
  4. Regional journal club.

The program will provide additional didactic education based on the fellow’s current clinical rotation.

PHM lecture series

The fellow will meet with a member of the Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine faculty to discuss a pre-selected topic. The fellow will complete readings on the assigned topic before meeting with the faculty member.

The discussion between the fellow and faculty member will include aspects of:

  • Diagnosis
  • Pathophysiology
  • Treatment plan
  • Follow-up
  • Atypical presentations

Unified fellows course

This is a weekly session sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh for fellows of all subspecialties. Fellows learn about the resources available to them through the college and UPMC.

The goal of these sessions is to help fellows transition to faculty positions.

Sessions include:

  • Mentoring
  • Research techniques
  • Career advice
  • Teaching skills
  • Work/life balance
  • Networking outside the fellow’s primary field

Diagnostic Service journal club

The fellow will attend the Diagnostic Services weekly journal club and will lead this session several times per year.

Regional journal club

The fellow will take part in a journal club with PHM fellows from other regional fellowship programs once a month.

The fellow can attend in person or via teleconference.
