Research Opportunities

The Department of Pediatrics at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is strongly committed to research and to mentoring residents with interest in research. Designated faculty members in each division are available to help residents develop a project and identify a mentor. Learn more about Children’s research program.

The Pediatric Residency Research Development Program, directed by Jon Watchko, MD, has two research options:

  • Senior Scholarly Project
    • Mentored research experience
      • 2-4 weeks as PL-2
      • Up to 2 months as PL-3
  • Research Education in Advancing Investigative Careers for House staff and Fellows (REACH) program. The REACH program provides:
    • A didactic series consisting of 8 weeks of intensive course work to teach fundamental skills of clinical research in July and August of the PL-2 year
    • Mentored research experience
      • 2 to 2.5 month block as PL-3
    • Residents may apply to the REACH program in the spring of the PL-1 year, application is competitive.
