Schedule and Rotations

After completion of two years of general pediatrics, residents will complete 24 months of Child Neurology (CN), 12 months of adult neurology as required by the ABPN, and 2 months of call-free research during PGY3-5. 

Our residents spend approximately 50% of the time on service and 50% exploring individualized career development through electives and research.

Residents have weekly Child Neurology continuity clinic during PGY3-5 for longitudinal management of neurologic concerns.

Child Neurology Service Rotations

Our residents gain expertise in managing inpatient and urgent pediatric neurology and enhance their leadership skills through experiences on 4 separate service rotations.

Inpatient/Ward
  • Patients with primary neurologic diagnosis
  • Dedicated Inpatient Team faculty attending
  • Other team members: pediatric interns, pediatric senior resident, PA, medical students
Inpatient Consults
  • Inpatient consults from floors, PICU, and CICU
  • Dedicated Consult Team faculty attending
  • Dedicated Faculty for Neonatal Neurology Consult service (in addition to consult attending) for NICU consultations
  • Other team members: rotating adult neurology residents, psychiatry and child psychiatry residents, pediatric residents, medical students
Neonatal Neurology
  • Separate Consult service with dedicated Neonatal attending for NICU consultations
  • NICU Consults at Childrens and Magee
  • Outpatient neurologic follow-up of infants after NICU discharge
  • Participation with attending in prenatal consultations
Outpatient Urgent/Emergency Room Consults
  • Urgent outpatient referrals
  • Consults from the emergency room for acute neurologic concerns
Overnight Call
  • Management of acute neurologic concerns at the hospital and within the surrounding community overnight
  • Home call with specific in-house responsibilities including: signout, feedback, and management of neurologic emergencies
  • Dedicated night-time faculty support for guidance and supervision
  • Personalized feedback from attendings about overnight EEG and MRI interpretation

General Pediatrics and Adult Neurology Training

ACGME requirements include 2 years of general pediatrics and 12 months of adult neurolog, including 6 months of adult neurology inpatient and 6 months of adult neurology outpatient/specialty rotations. We collaborate with the UPMC Pediatrics Residency and the  UPMC adult neurology program, and our residents complete the required 6 months of adult inpatient training and 1-2 months of adult outpatient rotations during their PGY-3 year.  Our residents are able to schedule additional adult neurology electives either in the PGY-3 year or throughout all 3 CN training years. Residents during their PGY-3 year also participate in a 2-month research elective.
