Pediatric INSIGHTS - Winter '06Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC

New Children’s in the Home Stretch

Natural light floods a patient room in the new Children’s Hospital.

The new Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is less than one year away from its opening in the spring of 2009. Exterior construction is almost complete on the family-friendly, green, technologically sophisticated campus, shown below.

Below left is the John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center, a 10-story, 300,000-square-foot building scheduled to open near the end of 2008. With seven stories of laboratory and conference space, the center will be at the heart of cutting-edge activity in Children’s rapidly expanding, internationally recognized medical research programs.

For patients and families, the new Children’s Hospital promises a homelike environment. This patient room in the photo above—like nearly every patient room in the new hospital—is private and spacious, with a large window that lets in natural light. To the left, a door opens to a private bathroom—standard in patient rooms. The couch converts to two comfortable sleeping surfaces.
