With Global Warming Comes a Rash of Poison Ivy
Cases of poison ivy treated this summer by Children’s pediatric dermatologists have been more severe than ever and included a sub-type known as “black dot” poison ivy. This is a rare form of the rash that begins with black spots caused by the oxidation of the plant oil on the skin.
This is mirroring a national trend of more severe poison ivy cases that is being linked in some studies to rising levels of carbon dioxide, which cause the plant to grow more vigorously and produce more of the oil that causes the rashes.
