Mystery Illness

Children’s has the largest and oldest diagnostic referral service in the country.

Led by Division Chief Basil Zitelli, MD, the staff members in the Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Center serve as the pediatrician’s pediatrician, making diagnoses and developing treatment plans for patients with complicated and/or rare conditions and diseases. Sometimes this means unraveling a medical mystery, making a difficult and lifesaving diagnosis where other physicians have been stumped. To solve these medical mysteries, they take extremely detailed medical histories from patients, run a variety of tests, share their experiences with one another and remain persistent.
