Overview

The Division of Child Neurology accepts one Neurodevelopmental Disabilities resident each year for a four-year training program that leads to board eligibility in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities and in Neurology with special competence in Child Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  For candidates who are applying for admission to the categorical Pediatrics Residency as well as the child neurology residency, we will have an integrated interview and admission process.

Prerequisites for acceptance into this program include completion of a minimum of two years of an ACGME-approved residency program in pediatrics and steps I, II and III of the USMLE. Foreign medical graduates must have up-to-date ECFMG certification.

The program consists of 12 months of adult neurology clinical training, 12 months of child neurology clinical training, 12 months of pediatric and adult neurodevelopmental disabilities clinical and research training, one month each mandatory rotation on child psychiatry, pediatric neurosurgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation, and additional required or elective rotations on EEG, neuropathology, neuroradiology and EMG. Mandatory outpatient Child Neurology, Child Development, and Tourette syndrome continuity clinics afford the resident mentored responsibility for the care of his or her own outpatients. Elective opportunities also include neuro-ophthalmology, clinical or basic neuroscience research and neuro-oncology.

The resident staff actively participates in outpatient and inpatient care. Daily service and consultative rounds are conducted at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. The Division of Child Neurology provides consultative services not only within Children’s Hospital, but to Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and Magee-Womens Hospital’s neonatal nursery as well.

Mandatory conference participation includes a weekly Child Neurology Case Conference, Child Neurology/Developmental Neuroscience Journal Club, and twice weekly Textbook Review Discussion Section. Members of the Division of Child Neurology participate on a regular basis in the grand rounds sessions of both the clinical neurosciences and pediatrics, as well as in many other conferences within the two departments.

The offices of the Division of Child Neurology are located in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, an academic institution of international reputation. This is the only children’s hospital in the western Pennsylvania region, serving a population of several million in western Pennsylvania, western Maryland, West Virginia, eastern Ohio and western New York.
