A Study of Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) for the Seasonal Prophylaxis of Influenza in Immunocompromised Patients

This study will review the effectiveness Tamiflu (oseltamivir) in the prevention of influenza in individuals with weakened immunity, such as transplant recipients. Oseltamivir is approved for use by the FDA and has been used by about 42 million people worldwide to treat or prevent influenza; however, oseltamivir has not been approved for use in the prevention of influenza in individuals with weakened immunity.

This study is taking place in approximately 150 centers in 15 countries including the United States. Approximately 470 people are expected to take part in the study.

Candidates
All individuals who are 1 year of age or older and who have had an organ (liver, kidney or liver and kidney) or stem cell (bone marrow) transplant are eligible to take part in the study.

Screening and monitoring visits for the study will take place at the transplant clinic at the Starzl Center for Transplantation at UPMC or at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Allergy and Immunology and Infectious Diseases Clinic.
Boys: 1 year of age or older
Girls: 1 year of age or older

Requirements
Study participants will visit the clinic 9 times over a 16-week period.  Following an initial screening visit, participants will be assigned to receive oseltamivir or placebo tablets once a day for 12 weeks during the season that influenza is occurring where they live. Participants (or their parents or guardians) also will be required to maintain a diary card throughout the study. Other requirements apply.
Visits: 9
Duration: 16 weeks

Status: Open for Enrollment
