The goal of the TODAY study is to discover the best way to treat type 2 diabetes in children and to investigate whether specific medicines or combinations of medicines along with weight management are better in treating type 2 diabetes in youth. The 3-step program involves screening, diabetes education and treatment using one of several options randomly assigned to participants. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases sponsors TODAY as part of its Studies to Treat Or Prevent Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes (STOPP-T2D).
Children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within 2 years, who are between the ages of 10 and 17, are being asked to participate in this study.
Boys: 10 to 17 years
Girls: 10 to 17 years
Through step 1, participants will be given initial screening tests to verify qualification for this study. Step 2, which may last from 8 to 24 weeks, will include visits to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC to reinforce diabetes education and dietary instruction, and homework such as maintaining dietary journals, monitoring physical activity and measuring blood sugar levels. Step 3 assigns qualified participants to one of these treatment regimens: standard diabetes care plus metformin; standard care plus metformin and rosiglitazone; or standard care plus metformin and a lifestyle program.
Visits: Approximately 4 per year
Duration: 2 to 5 years
