This study compares the effectiveness of aerobic exercise, resistance exercise and a combination of both on body composition and obesity-related risk factors in adolescents. In particular, researchers will be studying how the various exercise regimens help to reduce body fat and build muscle strength and bone density, and their effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. Through this study, researchers hope to identify the most effective exercise methods to reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Researchers are recruiting adolescent boys and girls, ages 12 through 17 who are overweight and are not currently engaged in physical activity beyond school physical education classes.
Boys and Girls: Ages 12 through 17
Following a screening study performed at Children’s Pediatric Clinical Translational Research Center (PCTRC), participants will be assigned to one of three exercise groups for a period of 6 months. A weight-maintenance diet will be prescribed and monitored. Participants will meet with a study dietitian at the program onset and during the study. Supervised exercise sessions will be 1-hour long, 3 days a week, either at Children’s exercise laboratory or at the PNC YMCA in downtown Pittsburgh. There will also be two overnight stays at the PCTRC for testing and monitoring.
Visits: 3 for evaluations, plus approximately 72 exercise sessions with trainers
Duration: 6 months
