1/7/21 – Exploring the Energy of Life: Cellular Bioenergetics and Human Disease

Bennett Van Houten, PhD
Richard M. Cyert Professor of Molecular Oncology, in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology
Co-leader Genome Stability Program, UPMC-Hillman Cancer Center

Brief Summary of Lecture
This lecture will describe how ATP, the currency of life, is generated in mitochondria of the cell. Information on alterations in mitochondrial function associated with human maladies such as aging, cancer and neurodegeneration, will be presented. Finally, a new chemoptogenetic method for alteration of mitochondrial function and subsequent telomere damage in living organisms will be described.
