Allergy and Immunology Fellowship

The UPMC Allergy & Immunology Fellowship Program offers a two to three year ACGME accredited training program. The program currently allows for two fellows per year: one from pediatrics and the other with a background in internal medicine or combined medicine-pediatrics.

We are a joint program housed in the two major academic tertiary care centers in the region: UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Division of Allergy & Immunology and the UPMC Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine.  One of the core strengths and features of the program is a 50/50 clinical experience in pediatric and adult clinical care, including inpatient and outpatient cases.

While training at leading centers in the region, our fellows will evaluate and treat patients with routine conditions including allergic rhinitis, asthma, and urticaria, but also complex patients referred for evaluation of rare inborn errors of immunity and immunologic disorders.  Our fellows learn the full breadth of Allergy/Immunology clinical care with in-depth clinical experiences and exposures to allergen and venom immunotherapy (including unique rapid desensitization protocols), food allergy evaluation, management, and food challenges, food allergy oral immunotherapy, severe asthma and atopic dermatitis management, drug allergy testing and challenges, and the use of biologic therapies and immunoglobulin replacement to treat a variety of allergic and immunologic disorders.

The University of Pittsburgh is a consistent leader in NIH funding, and fellows gain valuable research experience under the direction of internationally recognized mentors and a myriad of outstanding opportunities. Fellows learn from division faculty members who offer world-leading expertise in genetics, epidemiology, cellular and molecular biology, and clinical trials relating to allergic diseases, inborn errors of immunity, and asthma.

During the first year of training, fellows are able to work with a mentorship committee to explore research interests and identify potential research mentors. Research oversight committee meetings are held quarterly during the second year of fellowship, and the majority of this year is devoted to research. Fellows are expected to present research findings at a national meeting with the goal of preparing a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal by the completion of the training period. Fellows also have the opportunity to pursue a third year of training, which is dedicated to research.
