Man and woman fellows at computersBy the completion of training, our fellows are effective teachers in a wide-range of settings and to varied learners in the skills necessary for resuscitation and management of ill and injured children. They are able to provide progressive instruction based on adult learning principles, focused to the learner and setting ranging from bedside to small group workshops and simulations to large audience presentations.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Teaching A teaching to teach curriculum is given to PEM fellows covering adult learning principles, bedside teaching, small group and large group teaching, and curriculum development. Many opportunities exist for teaching during fellowship.  Fellows teach several sessions for our weekly PEM conference including cases of special interest/topic review and procedure lectures/workshops, and provide interactive and large group teaching on PEM core topics for our pediatric residency’s and emergency medicine residency’s educational conferences. Fellows teach PEM through simulation and are facilitators for several simulation courses including PEM mock code, and several pediatric and emergency medicine residency medical, sedation and trauma courses. All fellows teach PALS annually. Finally, several opportunities exist for medial student teaching for students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine including the Medical Student Advanced Pediatric Physical Exam Course.
