The Substance Misuse and Referral to Treatment (SMART) Choices program at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh seeks to help children avoid the long-term consequences of substance abuse. Run in a partnership with UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics, SMART Choices provides children and their families access to addiction experts in a nationally recognized, integrated primary care/behavioral health model.
Our systematic screening occurs at all well-child visits starting at age 11, allowing pediatricians to start the conversation – with youth and families – about ways to make safe choices and helping us improve access to quality care.
A grant from CVS Health allowed for the expansion of the program's three pilot sites to over over 30 additional practices, helping pediatricians and therapists develop skills to help children and families struggling with the use of drugs and alcohol.
