“The results of this trial should be used to inform collaborative discussions between parents and pediatricians about the best course of action to address recurrent ear infections in their children,” said co-author David Chi, M.D., clinical director of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology at UPMC Children’s Hospital. “In children who continue to get repeated infections, tympanostomy tubes will still be beneficial.”
“Finally, we must appreciate that for the relatively few children who continue to meet criteria for recurrent ear infections—three in six months or four in one year—after having met those criteria initially, placement of tympanostomy tubes may well be beneficial.”
