Diagnostic and Treatment Techniques
In the Pediatric Aerodigestive Center, most of our diagnostic approaches and customized medical and surgical treatment planning is done in a family-oriented way. This multi-disciplinary approach, using physicians from other related subspecialties, is used to achieve the absolute best possible outcome for the patient’s airway. Our experts consider the families of the patients to be important members of the treatment team. That’s why family teaching and input about patient care is a critical part of the Center.
Below are some of the advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques we use for children with aerodigestive disorders.
Digital Endoscopic Video Equipment
The Pediatric Aerodigestive Center uses non-invasive digital endoscopic video equipment to assess upper airway and voice disorders. The images from these videos are used to help the otolaryngologist make the diagnosis and determine the best therapy to treat the condition. We also use these images to instruct and teach the families and caregivers about the child’s condition.
Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
The Pediatric Aerodigestive Center is one of the few centers in the country doing FEES as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool to help children with feeding and swallowing issues. Our speech therapists support this testing and work with children to improve speech.
State-of-the-Art Pulmonology Lab
The Pediatric Aerodigestive Center is supported by a state-of-the-art pulmonology lab, which has the ability to perform endoscopic-assisted pulmonary function tests and exercise-induced pulmonary function tests.
CINE-MRI
The Pediatric Aerodigestive Center is one of the few centers in the country to have CINE-MRI used in diagnosing some of the most complex patients with aerodigestive and disorders.
Surgical Treatment
For those children who require surgery, a full range of treatment techniques are available, with each treatment plan precisely tailored to the individual patient’s problem. Our specialists us lasers, innovative surgical procedures using cartilage and mucosal grafting, and minimally-invasive endoscopic techniques including Balloon dilatation, to give patients the most up-to-date and effective options to improve their upper airway passages.
