Sleep Program, Pediatric

Description of Services

The Pediatric Sleep Program at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is the region’s leader in diagnosing and treating sleeping problems in infants, toddlers, adolescents and teens arising from medical conditions or from behavioral or developmental problems. The team – which includes pediatric experts from a variety of fields including psychology, pulmonology, otolaryngology and diet/nutrition – and its deep understanding of the unique medical, developmental and behavioral concerns that affect children helps team members diagnose and treat pediatric sleep disorders.

Patients of the Sleep Program receive comprehensive, state-of-the-art care in a warm, kid-friendly environment supervised by highly trained physicians and technicians who are experts in diagnosing a wide variety of sleep disorders. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists can conduct a comprehensive sleep assessment, including an overnight sleep test if necessary, and suggest the most appropriate treatment for each child.

About Sleep Disorders

Common sleep disorders include:

  • Sleepwalking and -talking
  • Bedwetting
  • Restless sleep
  • Pauses in breathing for short periods during sleep (apnea)
  • Narcolepsy (uncontrollable daytime sleep episodes)
  • Night terrors

Many factors can cause sleep disorders, including:

  • Enlarged tonsils, asthma or other conditions that affect breathing
  • Medical diseases like obesity
  • Medications
  • Caffeine
  • Lack of a regular sleep schedule
  • Psychological factors like depression and anxiety
  • Pain
