Our Physicians and Staff

In May 1981, a team of transplant surgeons at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh transplanted a liver into a 2-year-old boy from Tennessee. Two decades later, Children’s has performed more than 1,600 pediatric transplants—more than any other pediatric transplant center in the world. Through this extensive experience, transplant surgeons and teams at Children’s Hospital have improved surgical techniques and post-surgical treatment.

Children’s pediatric transplant teams provide comprehensive patient care. Teams include transplant surgeons, infectious disease specialists, intensivists, laboratory specialists, pharmacists, nurses, physician’s assistants, social workers, child life specialists, dietitians, physical therapists and occupational therapists. Highly educated clinical transplant nurse coordinators also participate as key members of the pediatric transplant team and manage all aspects of patient care on an individual basis. Nurse coordinators maintain close, lifetime relationships with patients, families and referring pediatricians.
