Hearing Center

Description of Services

Children’s Hearing Center provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children with sensorineural hearing impairment. Each year, about 12,000 children are born in the United States with sensorineural hearing loss, which can result in mild to profound loss of hearing.

Children's Hospital physicians were instrumental in developing universal protocols throughout the United States for newborn hearing screening tests in order to identify these children at a very young age. Diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss is established using comprehensive audiologic testing.

Because of this comprehensive evaluation, children are seen at Children's Hospital's main campus in the Lawrenceville section of PIttsburgh. Services include comprehensive medical evaluation, counseling, amplification (hearing aids) and cochlear implants.

Referral Requirements

Referrals are required from primary care physicians or other Children’s Hospital specialty services. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from the insurance provider and primary care physician. All necessary referral and authorization forms must be received before the patient’s visit. For accurate provider numbers or more information, please call the office number listed.
