Health Information Management Services
Description of Services
Health Information Management Services (formerly the Medical Records Department) maintains records for all inpatient, same-day surgery and outpatient services. Access to records is protected by federal HIPAA regulations. Copies of records may be released upon receipt of written authorization of the patient (if over 18 years of age) or the parent/guardian. The authorization must:
- Include the name and address of the person receiving the copies
- Be signed and dated by the patient or parent/guardian
- Be addressed to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh
In emergency situations, information can be faxed.
There is a charge to obtain copies of medical records if requested for private use by patients or parents. The charge is waived if the copies are forwarded to other medical providers or facilities for continuing medical care.

8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Monday – Friday
The department is open 24 hours a day seven days a week for back-office support activities, including retrieval of medical records for patient care and copying of STAT-type patient transfers.
