Volunteer Opportunities

At Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, we believe in the principles and practice of patient- and family-centered care.. As an organization we work to partner with patients and families at every juncture, acknowledging that the family is a child’s primary source of strength and support. Each patient and family is unique, with individual needs and circumstances. We work to anticipate families’ needs and treat every patient and family member with respect and dignity. As a volunteer at Children’s Hospital, you will be an ambassador of patient- and family-centered care. Volunteers are crucial to providing an additional level of support to patients and families, and serve as resources to meet the needs of patients and families during a hospitalization.

Volunteer Coordinators work closely with hospital staff at all levels to identify opportunities where volunteers can most impact the patient and family experience and truly make a difference. Our goal is to match you with an identified opportunity that best serves our patients and families and provides you with a meaningful experience. Whatever your role, you can be certain that your efforts will make a difference for our patients and families.

We sincerely appreciate your interest in contributing your time and talent to help the kids and families at Children’s. Due to the large number of volunteer applications that we have received in recent months, applications submitted after December 1, 2012 will be reviewed beginning February 15, 2013.Your patience during this exceptionally busy time is appreciated and we look forward to welcoming new volunteers in March 2013.

Throughout the year, we receive many requests from groups interested in organizing or participating in activities with patients and families at the hospital. Successful group activities and projects frequently require at least a 6 to 8 week planning period. Therefore we are not always able to accommodate all requests, and especially those on short notice. Interested groups should contact a Volunteer Coordinator to initiate a group project.

We prioritize all volunteer applications and requests based on our needs to provide services that are most critical to serving the needs and assisting our patients and their families. If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact the Volunteer Services office.
