Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Service

Hospital Medicine & Outpatient Consultation

The Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Service serves families and primary care physicians in two ways:

The pediatricians in this division care for infants, children, and young adults whose conditions require admission to the hospital — from basic pediatric disorders to complex multi-system diagnoses and beyond.

They serve as the primary care physician’s partner by:

  • Caring for hospitalized patients.
  • Providing ongoing communication to ensure a safe transition once home.

Members of the Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Service are skilled at working with the many specialists in the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh community to facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment options. In 2016, the Diagnostic Service pediatricians cared for over 25% of the patients admitted to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Outpatient Consultation Services

In addition to their role as inpatient pediatricians, the Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Service provides outpatient general consultation visits for primary care physicians who may be seeking a fresh perspective on diagnosis and treatment for patients with unusual or challenging presentations.
