Creative and Expressive Arts Therapy: A Masterpiece of Hope

The Creative and Expressive Arts Therapy program (CEAT) at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh provides a creative, therapeutic approach during your child's stay.

How Can Our Creative & Expressive Arts Therapy (CEAT) Program Help Your Child?

Hospitalization can often be a challenging and scary experience to endure. Sometimes, there are no words to describe the feelings that accompany being in the hospital. Making art and music offers an outlet to communicate when there are no words. Our board-certified therapists utilize music and/or art interventions to meet the physical, mental, emotional, social, and medical needs of hospitalized patients. Our creative arts therapists provide individual, group, and family-based services to enhance hospitalization through:

  • A personalized approach to a child's traditional medical treatment, helping them to heal and create hope
  • Utilizing art- and music-making for exploring and processing feelings around treatment, diagnosis, and the hospital experience
  • Implementing art and music interventions to help patients with procedures, pain, trauma, grief, and anxiety, and to normalize hospitalization
  • Supporting the grief and bereavement process through the creation of art and music pieces for legacy building, family bonding, and the development of lasting memories
  • Employing traditional counseling principles through art and music interventions to develop coping skills, confidence, and self esteem

The Creative and Expressive Arts Therapy team works with patients to tell their story through music and art, creating a masterpiece of hope.
