For International Patients and Families

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is colorful, warm, and welcoming. Even so, we know the challenges that can come from traveling far away for medical care. So we offer a variety of services that will help ease the experience for patients and families.

International Patient Referral Information

When seeking a referral to Children’s Hospital, your first step is to contact the International Services team by calling +1-412-692-3000 or by sending an email to international@chp.edu

You will need the following items:

  • An up-to-date medical record, preferably translated into English
  • Any applicable films and test results
  • A letter of explanation regarding the goals of the family in terms of the child’s treatment outcomes

PassportCare

Before you arrive in Pittsburgh, a team member will help you define both patient and family needs and initiate any special arrangements. We will also help you with the documentation needed to obtain a U.S. visa for your stay. And as long as you are with us, we will continue to support you with the information and resources you need.

Even after you return home, a representative from Children's Hospital will be available to facilitate clinical and administrative dealings with us. Our goal is to help you focus on your child by taking care of the non-medical details.

Financial Services for Patients and Their Families

A finance specialist will help you manage the financial aspects of your care at Children's Hospital. Our goal is to provide a clear, simple financial plan for services. We'll help you to understand and navigate our billing and payment system. We also assist you when dealing with your sponsoring organization, insurance provider, government, embassy, or military office.

Accommodations

Helping you find housing that suits your needs, whether on campus or nearby, is part of our job. One popular resource for families is The Ronald McDonald House, located on Children's main campus. It provides low-cost temporary housing to patients and families receiving medical care.
