Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP)

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of the city, is seeking undergraduate students to apply for the Summer Research Internship Program. The grant funded internship will provide an opportunity for students to perform research in one of the various research departments within the University of Pittsburgh.

The internship is eight weeks in duration and begins on the first Monday in June and runs through the last Friday in July. The schedule is based on the needs of the research lab in conjunction with planned scientific, clinical, and social experiences. Working hours are Monday through Friday, with the expectation that students will complete 40 hours per week. Under supervision of a principal investigator and according to established procedures, the student carries out experimental design of an assigned research project. Students will analyze data and prepare a final project to summarize results.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Organize experimental tests relevant to the assigned project.
  • Coordinate with animal research technicians and other lab personnel as required.
  • Perform various experimental tests according to prescribed research protocol.
  • Evaluate test results and conduct data analysis and statistical testing as instructed.
  • Record data and relevant information in laboratory notebooks or in computer files.
  • Perform and record quality controls instituted to ensure test validity, (i.e., calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment).
  • Attend scheduled seminars, meetings and other events assigned by the principal investigator.
  • Adhere to the standards of responsible conduct in research.
  • Complete a final project of the work performed which is required for successful completion of the program.
Eligibility Criteria:
  • Active enrollment in a degree-granting program with an institution of higher learning. Science based programs are preferred.
  • Verifiable undergraduate coursework including two semesters of education or at least one semester of education remaining upon completion of the internship or acceptance into an advanced degree program upon completion of the internship.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Legal Status.
  • Ability to provide and pay for required clearances including, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 clearances.
  • Successful submission of the SRIP Written Evaluation and Application.

Program Dates

The summer 2024 program will commence on Monday, June 3 and conclude on Friday, July 26, 2024. Student interns will have the opportunity to present the results of their research in the form of a mandatory poster presentation the last week of the program.

The statement of purpose essay is the only required material for the application. College transcripts will be requested during the selection process. Letters of recommendation are not required and will not be considered in the application review process. Notification of acceptance into the program will be announced in February 2024.

Due to the increased number of applicants, the review and selection process has been extended. Applicants will be informed of their acceptance in March 2024.
