Research Labs

The recent extraordinary advances in developmental, cellular and molecular biology present possibilities for the prevention and treatment of disease that could not have been imagined just a few years ago. Thanks to the commitment of the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the Institute will be able to take these advances to the next level.

The scientists within the Institute come from different disciplines and work together as a think tank to spur innovation. Specific pursuits are structured around the Institute director, Jay Kolls, MD, and each of the Mellon Scholars. For example, Dr. Kolls, a leading immunologist and pulmonary specialist is focused on how the human lungs protect themselves from microbial invasion. His research is leading to a better understanding of pneumonia, steroid refractory asthma, inflammatory diseases of the liver and allergic bronchopulmonary disease in children with cystic fibrosis.
