Pediatric Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Human Islet Biology/Insulin Secretion

A post-doctoral fellowship position in islet biology/insulin secretion/prediabetes/type 2 diabetes is available at the Center for Pediatric Research in Obesity and Metabolism at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The position is with an established group of pediatric investigators studying the pathophysiology of youth-onset type 2 diabetes, specifically the etiology of islet secretory dysfunction, incretin hormones, and loss of β-cells that characterize the natural history of the disease.

By working on ongoing and developing projects, the fellow will have the opportunity to undertake pediatric studies that include the use of clamp experiments, as well as oral glucose tolerance tests, to investigate islet biology in health and disease, and in intervention/prevention trials to reverse pathophysiological alterations. Additionally, the fellow will have the prospect to utilize existing data for scientific presentations and publications. Further, the fellow is expected to develop expertise in magnetic resonance imaging to assess ectopic fat, including visceral and liver fat. A multitude of ongoing obesity studies and clinical trials in new drug discovery for youth-onset type 2 diabetes will help expand the fellow’s knowledge of the disease.

The position is available immediately for a minimum of two to three years, and will remain vacant until a suitable candidate is available. A background in pediatric obesity and its comorbidities would be advantageous, but is not essential. Interested individuals should send their curriculum vitae, a letter of intent, and the names of two to three references to Silva Arslanian, MD, Richard L. Day Endowed Professor of Pediatrics, c/o Marcy Vecchio at marcy.vecchio@chp.edu.
