The pursuit of novel discoveries for the world’s most prevalent childhood disorder, obesity and its associated co-morbidities, defines the work of the Center for Pediatric Research in Obesity and Metabolism (CPROM).
The Center is a hub for collaborative, interdisciplinary research to study childhood obesity and co-morbidities, such as type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), sleep apnea, brain functional and structural alterations, cardiovascular disease, adipocyte biology and inflammation, and gene-environment interaction, among others. We pursue novel discoveries while challenging dogma and conventional wisdom, ultimately leading to paradigm shifts in pediatric medicine resulting in improved health of children.
Located within UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center, the center’s faculty and programs are part of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. Led by its internationally renowned scientific director, Silva Arslanian, MD, the center supports the work of exceptionally talented researchers and physician-scientists and their teams by encouraging pursuit of their most innovative ideas. The result will have a profound impact in advancing our understanding of the causes and treatment of pediatric obesity and co-morbidities.
