To further expand access to meet the growing demand for expert pediatric specialty care services in Erie, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has opened a second specialty care center location, UPMC Children’s Specialty Care Center Erie – Peach Street in the community. UPMC Children’s also operates a specialty care center at UPMC Magee-Womens at UPMC Hamot.

 

UPMC Children’s has a large presence in Erie, and this will add to the strong complement of pediatric services available, including inpatient care with a nine-bed pediatric unit at UPMC Hamot. UPMC Hamot also provides continuum of care from newborn to adolescent age at UPMC Magee-Womens in Erie, with a 16-bed newborn nursery and a 24-bed neonatal intensive care unit.

 

Outpatient care is also offered through UPMC Children’s Express Care-Erie, pediatric emergency care services and UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics offices throughout the region.

 

“Our volume has increased year after year in Erie for outpatient care,” said Diane Hupp, president, UPMC Children’s Hospital. “We see the increase in the demand for pediatric care in this region, and we are here to ensure that specialized care remains easily accessible for patients and families close to home.”

 

Pediatric specialists from UPMC Children’s Hospital will travel to the new location to provide evaluations and follow-up care. Outpatient services will include diabetes, endocrinology, neurology, neurosurgery, rheumatology, physical medicine,rehabilitation and plastic surgery.

 

“Today, we add to our growing list of what differentiates us from other health care organizations in the region,” said Brian Durniok, president, regional health services, UPMC Hamot. “The community relies on the nationally ranked expertise of UPMC Children’s for unmatched pediatric care for children with acute illnesses and injuries throughout the Erie region.”

 

The current specialty care center at UPMC Magee-Womens at UPMC Hamot will provide ear, nose and throat (ENT) as a new service in July. Services already provided include allergy, cardiology, child advocacy, Down syndrome, gastroenterology, genetics, hematology, nephrology, pediatric gynecology, pediatric surgery and pulmonology. Orthopaedics is also offered at Shriner’s Children's Erie.

 

“The care that is provided in this region for our kids, teens and young adults highlights how we can effectively and efficiently provide smooth transitions of care from the inpatient to outpatient setting for families and improve the patient experience,” said Michael Comunale, vice president, pediatric service line, UPMC Children’s.
