Through this study, researchers are collecting data about naturally occurring germs in the sinuses. Investigators hope to determine the normal “microbiome,” that is, the naturally occurring organisms that live in the sinuses, and understand how that microbiome changes in patients who have been diagnosed with sinus infections (chronic rhinosinusitis) and are undergoing adenoidectomy.
Subject to exclusion criteria, the study is accepting patients of both genders, ages 1 to 21, who are having their adenoids removed because of sinus infections or other reasons.
Males and Females: Ages 1 to 21
A nasal swab will be done prior to adenoidectomy and at surgical follow up visit(s) to obtain samples of nasal material. Participants or their parent/guardians will complete a short survey that includes questions about symptoms of sinus infection, nasal obstruction, allergies, emotional distress, and activity limitations. Additional nasal swabs may be taken for up to 3 years during follow up visits related to the adenoidectomy.
Visits: None beyond clinical care for adenoidectomy
Duration: Up to 3 year
