This study is investigating the genetics of why some children are more susceptible to recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), this disease can cause recurring warts in the airway that need to be repeatedly removed by surgery. Researchers will collect DNA (genetic material) from blood of affected patients and a sample of the warts when removed from the airway. Researchers will also collect DNA from blood, sputum ("spit") or from cheek cells of their parents or siblings. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is among 25 centers participating.
Individuals of both genders diagnosed with RRP before the age of 18 and their parents or full siblings are eligible.
Boys: No age limit
Girls: No age limit
Participants and their family members will provide blood samples and other samples, which may be collected through their own health-care providers or outside laboratories. Tissue and other samples from patients are obtained at time of surgical procedure or during an office visit (blood) if no surgery. Medical record information about the patient will be updated annually.
Duration: Open-ended for annual updates
