Children and young adults with chronic pain receive the highest standards of care at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Our pain management team offers holistic and complete services to help restore your child's daily functioning and wellness.  

We see children and young adults at Children’s Hospital's main campus in Lawrenceville and Children’s Pine Center in Wexford, Pa.,(Mondays only).

Chronic Pain Problems We Treat

We treat children with common chronic pain problems such as:

• Amplified pain syndrome
• AV malformation pain
• Brachial plexus pain
• Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
• Fibromyalgia
• Functional abdominal pain
• Headaches (needing occipital nerve blocks)
• Hypermobility syndrome
• Juvenile arthritis pain
• Myofascial pain/musculoskeletal pain
• Sickle cell disease pain

Children's Chronic Pain Team

Our team consists of:

• A pediatric anesthesiologist
• Nurse practitioners and RN coordinator
• A physical therapist
• A social worker 
• A behavioral health provider

Your Child's First Visit for Chronic Pain Treatment

Effectively treating pediatric chronic pain requires thorough, often time-consuming, exams. You can expect your child's first visit to last about 90 minutes.

The first visit includes assessments by each member of the team. They will then discuss and design a plan of care that meets your child's exact needs.

Treatments for chronic pain

Treatments may include:

• Trigger point shots
• Nerve blocks
• Medicine
• Physical therapy
• Biofeedback
• Relaxation and breathing techniques
• Acupuncture

Follow-up visits will depend on your child's care plan. You may not need to see all members of the pain team at each visit.
