Thyroid problems affect nearly 60 million Americans, including children and teens, and in recent years, the likelihood of being diagnosed with thyroid cancer has risen significantly. In light of this trend, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh has established a dedicated Pediatric Thyroid Center, where a multidisciplinary team of experts in pediatric endocrinology, oncology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pathology, and radiology, as well as child life specialists, come together to diagnose and treat all types of thyroid conditions, from nodules to thyroid cancer.
Patients at the Pediatric Thyroid Center experience an integrated team approach for the evaluation and treatment of thyroid disease and related conditions, and advanced imaging and molecular diagnostic studies are used to help clinicians develop innovative treatment plans.
For patients with any type of thyroid disorder, the Pediatric Thyroid Center offers a wide range of specialized services:
For patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer, the Pediatric Thyroid Center provides expert medical, surgical, and diagnostic imaging services. Randy Windreich, MD, from the Hematology/Oncology Division, consults with families of children diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Highly trained pediatric radiologists perform fine-needle aspiration biopsies of thyroid nodules with a specialized pediatric cytopathologist on site to optimize diagnostic yield. Children’s also provides thorough preparation and appropriate treatment with radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer, based upon the latest recommendations by the American Thyroid Association. Postsurgical consultation and counseling with other members of the team are offered.
