Frequently Asked Questions About Student Nursing

How many hours so students work?

Each student's schedule is different. We offer full-time, part-time, and casual positions for both the Health Unit Coordinator and Patient Care Technician position. Full-time is 40 hours per week, part-time is generally 20 hours per week, and casual is the most flexible scheduling option. Casual employees generally work around 4 hours per week.

Can I work full-time for the summer, and part-time when I return to school?

Please keep in mind that we hire candidates that can make a long term commitment to our position. If you want to work throughout the year, we recommend applying for only those positions that can accommodate your schedule for the entire year. However, some units are able to provide you with extra hours, if needed.

When should I apply?

Each position has a different time table, as referenced below:

  • Health Unit Coordinator and Patient Care Technician positions are available at all points in the year. For these two positions, we would recommend applying when you are available to work.
  • Patient Support Assistant position, we recommend applying as soon as the position is posted, usually around the beginning of the spring semester.
  • Student Nurse Intern position, we recommend applying around the middle of the fall semester.

Please feel free to contact the Human Resources Department to follow up on the status of your application.

Do I have to apply online for each position I am interested in?

Yes. One application does not mean that you will be considered for all positions for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. You need to apply for each position that you are interested in. We encourage all applicants to apply for as many positions that interest you!

How long does it take from when I apply to hear something?

There is no set timeline for the review of an application due to the volume of responses we receive for positions. Please feel free to contact the Human Resources Department to follow up on the status of your application.

What is the orientation process for each position?

Each position does require you to attend an Introductory Day One Orientation with Human Resources, a Monthly New Hire Human Resources follow up orientation, and Patient Care Orientation which will vary in duration depending on your role.
