Neurocritical Care

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unti (PICU) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh have specialized neurocritical care units to diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate children from birth through young adulthood with any neurologic condition. 

  • NICU— includes a multidisciplinary team dedicated to newborns,  one of only three of its kind in the  county.
  • PICU — cares for children following severe trauma and major surgery, and those suffering from a broad range of critical medical disorders.

Our Neurocritical Care Team

Our team works together to provide the highest level of care for children with disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and includes:

  • Specialized intensive care physicians
  • Neurologists
  • Nurses
  • Occupational and physical therapists
  • Pharmacists
  • Dietitians

Referral Requirements

Referrals are required from primary care physicians or other Children’s Hospital specialty services. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from the insurance provider and primary care physician.
