Pediatric Neuroendoscopic Surgery

At UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, we believe parents and guardians can help make your child’s surgery a success. Please read the following information to learn about the surgery and how you can assist.

Fast Facts About Neuroendoscopic Surgery

  • Neuroendoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure to remove tumors that are deep within your child’s brain using a surgical instrument with a light and a camera called an endoscope.
  • Neuroendoscopic surgery is performed at UPMC Children’s. Your child will need to stay in the hospital for at least one night after the procedure.
  • Your child’s surgery will be done under general anesthesia, which means that he or she will be asleep during the surgery.
  • When general anesthesia is needed, there are special rules for eating and drinking that must be followed in the hours before surgery.
  • During the procedure, a pediatric neurosurgeon will use CT or MRI imaging (stereotactic) guidance, an endoscope, and specialized surgical instruments to remove the tumor through a dime-sized opening in your child’s skull.
  • Neuroendoscopic procedures typically take four to six hours. Your child should be able to return to most normal activities within six to eight weeks.
