UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh has been accredited by CARF for the following programs: inpatient rehabilitation program – hospital, pediatric specialty program.

At the Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Unit (CHRU), we recognize this can be a stressful time. But we also know that kids need to be kids. Because of this, we strive to provide a supportive place for you and your child. We tailor our plans of care to your child's unique needs by providing:

  • Cutting-edge rehabilitation.
  • Team-based care, including
    • Medical care.
    • Nursing.
    • Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
    • On-site access to medical imaging.
    • Rapid access to pharmacy services and lab work.
  • A home-like environment where you stay at their bedside.
  • Access to Ronald McDonald House Pittsburgh.
  • School teacher, recreation therapy, psychology, social work, care coordination, and music, art, and pet therapy.
  • Contracts with providers for specialized assessment of vision and assistive technology (AT).
  • Partnerships with outside providers for assessment and provision of durable medical equipment as well as orthotics and prosthetics.
  • Healthful community outings.
  • Extensive education and training for the transition home.

Who's a Candidate for Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation?

The patients we serve include children and young adults from less than 1 year of age to 25 years of age, diagnosed with, but not limited to:

  • Acquired brain injury
    • Traumatic brain injury
    • Non-traumatic brain injury
    • Stroke
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spinal cord injury*
    • Traumatic
    • Non-traumatic
  • Prolonged hospital stays/deconditioning
  • Complex orthopedic injury
  • Pulmonary/mechanical respiratory support
  • Amputation
  • Other disabling neurological conditions

*Our spinal cord program specifically considers the cause, including traumatic vs. non-traumatic injuries, the location of the injury, how injury may affect function, as well as completeness of injury. Any comorbidities are evaluated and incorporated into the team’s plan of care.
