When your child returns home after an intestinal transplant, he or she may have to use a catheter for a period of time. Below are some tips on how to flush a catheter.
Supplies you will need:
- One (1) heparin syringe for each lumen
- Alcohol wipes
- Sharps container
How to do it:
- Gather all your supplies. Before you begin, make sure that your work area is clean, and then wash your hands.
- Clean the injection cap on the end of your catheter with a new alcohol wipe. Avoid touching the cap with your fingers, only the sterile alcohol wipe.
- Hold the syringe upright and push any air out of it.
- Attach the syringe of heparin to the end of the injection cap.
- Flush the catheter with heparin.
- Repeat steps 2-5 for each lumen.
