Student Research Training Program

Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP)

The Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) provides experience in research laboratories for undergraduate students in Health Sciences who wish to learn the rationale, design strategies, methods and other aspects of biomedical research as research interns. Participants will acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical training in research and scientific experimentation as they engage in studies under the direct supervision of investigators who are faculty and staff of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Research opportunities are available in the majority of our basic science departments, clinical internship positions are limited.

Participants must have completed their freshman undergraduate year prior to the start of the 2023 program to be eligible. Students who will have a BA or BS prior to the start of the program (June 2023) should not apply. SRIP is appropriate for students considering application to advanced degree programs in biomedical sciences or medical school.

Program activities include a variety of career development and scientific research seminars offered weekly. Students interested in clinical medicine are provided the opportunity to “round” with faculty and residents, providing a glimpse of life in clinical medicine at an academic institution. Rotations are offered in various inpatient areas including the operating room and emergency department.

In addition to the educational benefits, research interns are also compensated. Unless otherwise indicated, housing is not provided.
