Summer Research Internship Program

The Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) provides experience in research laboratories for undergraduate students in Health Sciences who wish to learn the rationale, design strategies, methods and other aspects of biomedical research as research interns. Participants will acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical training in research and scientific experimentation as they engage in studies under the direct supervision of investigators who faculty and staff of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh. Research opportunities are available in the majority of our basic science departments; clinical internship positions are limited.

Participants must have completed their freshman undergraduate year to be eligible. Students who will have a BA or BS prior to the start of the program (June 2020) should not apply. SRIP is appropriate for students considering application to advanced degree programs in biomedical sciences or medical school.

Program activities include a variety of career development and scientific research seminars offered weekly. Students interested in clinical medicine are given the opportunity to “round” with faculty and residents, providing a glimpse of life in clinical medicine at an academic institution. Rotations are offered in various inpatient areas including the operating room and emergency department.

In addition to the educational benefits, research interns are also compensated however, housing is not provided.

The summer 2020 program will be conducted from Monday, June 1, through Friday, July 25, 2020. Student interns will have the opportunity to present the results of their research in the form of a mandatory poster presentation the last week of the program.

To apply for the 2020 Summer Research Internship Program, candidates will need to complete the application process through the UPMC portal. The application process will kick-off in early January 2020.

Application materials will include resume, essay and transcript. Letters of recommendation are not required and will not be considered in the application review process. Notification of acceptance into the program will announced in April 2020.
