The Dream Big Studio at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is part of Creative and Expressive Arts Therapy (CEAT). It's an independent TV and radio studio funded wholly by private donations.
Dream Big teaches children through entertainment and peer interaction.
The programs we air are special because our young patients create the content themselves.
Having control over what they make and how they engage gives them a chance to:
This studio doesn't focus on therapy — only interactive fun. Our services are as expansive as our patients can dream.
Children who come to the studio get hands-on experience by having the chance to be:
They can also help with production by learning about TV and radio equipment and running the lights or cameras.
Types of programs you can expect include:
This closed-circuit, in-house station also allows us to host visitors — including celebrities — who can visit each child at the same time.
Imagine being in the hospital for a long stay, and you can't leave your room. At home, you're at school and around other kids, but then you're suddenly isolated.
These can be stressful times for kids and can cause them to feel lonely.
When we designed our studio, we had these children in mind.
Dream Big gives those in isolation a way to reach beyond their hospital rooms and connect with other kids.
From their rooms, children can tune in to Channel 1 to see our taped and live shows. They can also play along during our live games, such as bingo, and call in to shout "Bingo!"
Our station is always looking for new content.
We want to include new and fresh talent, ideas, on-air personalities, and listeners who might call into a show.
If your child has an idea for a show on Channel 1 — Dream Big, ask staff for a consult with our team.
We're open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
To start with, you can find our live shows on a public calendar available on Channel 1 and at each HUC station. Afterward, we'll invite kids to come see how we make our shows during our “Backstage Pass” time.
As the calendar grows, we'll include open studio times where kids can:
State-of-the-art studio at Children's Hospital keeps kids connected WTAE (5/1/2020)
UPMC Children's Turns Patients Into Little Broadcasters 90.5 WESA (2/26/2020)

In addition to child led programming, we offer internship experiences to students pursuing careers in video production, journalism, communications, theater and the entertainment industry. This internship will provide students the opportunity to gain experience in a closed-circuit radio tv studio and continue crafting their cinema production skills. Interns will experience direct interaction with patients and families while learning about the world of radio and television. For more information, you can read our internship guidelines.
