UPMC's Behavioral Science Division trains new doctors and mental health experts. We help them learn how to care for kids with health issues.
Trainees can complete fellowships at several of our clinics. Each clinic has its own health focus. Fellows learn about the behavioral health care of kids through hands-on work with our attending doctors.
The Behavioral Science Division trains students at multiple levels. These include:
We do not train undergraduate students at this time.
The Behavioral Science Division is part of UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. We are proud to train graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in pediatric psychology.
Our program works where pediatrics, clinical psychology, and behavioral medicine meet. Our mission is to advance pediatric psychology. We improve the health, quality of life, and outcomes for the kids we treat.
The Behavioral Science Division embeds our attendings in clinics caring for kids with specific health issues. Clinics include endocrinology, neurology, cardiology, and palliative care. In these clinics, our attendings offer mental health care for kids alongside care from their other doctors.
Our attendings assess kids and offer preventative services. They support positive psychiatric and health outcomes. Trainees of all levels work closely with attending clinicians.
Trainees may:
Most of our attending clinicians work with kids in the hospital and on an outpatient basis. Most trainees can work in either setting.
Trainees can also rotate through one or more of our clinics. We assign clinics based on available supervisors and the hospital's needs. We also consider the trainee's interest, education, and where they've worked and studied.
We care for people similar to the larger population of Pittsburgh and nearby areas. Trainees work with groups from different ethnic, cultural, developmental, and health backgrounds.
All trainees will work within a medical focus other than behavioral health.
Depending on the clinic, a trainee may work with people across a wide age span. They may care for babies up to young adults (age 26). The exact ranges served depend on the clinic.
Most clinics care for people of many ages, sexual orientations, developmental trajectories, and cultural backgrounds.
